HOLIDAYS THIS WEEK
October 13-October 19, Sukkot, the Jewish Feast of the Tabernacles. Sukkot is a Biblical holiday celebrated on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei (late September to late October). It is one of the three biblically mandated festivals Shalosh regalim on which Jews were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. The holiday lasts seven days. The first day is a sabbath. The Hebrew word sukkôt is the plural of sukkah, "booth or tabernacle", which is a walled structure covered with schach (plant material such as tree branches or bamboo shoots). The sukkah is intended as a reminiscence of the type of fragile dwellings in which the Israelites dwelt during their 40 years of travel in the desert after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. Throughout the holiday meals are eaten inside the sukkah and many sleep there as well. On each day of the holiday, members of the household recite a blessing over the lulav and etrog (Four species). According to Zechariah, in the messianic era Sukkot will become a universal festival and all nations will make pilgrimages annually to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast there.
October 13, Ramadan Ends, today ends the Islamic month of Ramadan- a month of strict fasting. Muslims observe this by enjoying a three-day celebration known as the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. Visiting and exchanging small gifts are common activities today, and families prepare their favorite foods. Since breaking the fast is a major theme today, people of all faiths can learn something from this Islamic experience. To begin, prepare or purchase one of your favorite meals, but don’t eat it. Instead, share it with friends or an elderly person who finds it hard to cook. You may also purchase food and donate it to a food bank. In some small way it may help us to appreciate the Islamic tradition of fasting, and a t the same time, give us a chance to help others.
October 15, Winter’s Day, the Romans celebrated today as Winter’s Day, the day when all summer activities ended and preparation for winter began. Light a stick of incense and burn a white candle. Spend as much of the day as possible cleaning out your closets, storing away summer clothes, stacking firewood- whatever tasks you undertake to ready yourself for the winter season. Perform these tasks with mindfulness and joy. If you can, build a fire tonight. Gaze into the flames and say: “Winter’s day, winter’s night, blazing fire, shining bright, give me now the second sight.” Images may appear in the flames. Think of how these images may guide you this season.
--Witches’ Spell-a-Day Almanac 2007
DEFINITION OF THE DAY: Tradition- a particular branch of Wicca, Witchcraft, or Paganism that one practices.
AFFIRMATION: Sparkle. I watch the sparkle in the air, on the water, and in the eyes of others as I move through my day. Every twinkle reminds me to enjoy life.
QUOTE: “Earth and Heaven are in us.” ~Mahatma Gandhi
THOUGHT: Just as a kite flies high, held only by a string, our intellect can rise to the heights of wisdom, pulled only by the thread of spiritual love.
PRAYER: Make me strong in spirit
Courageous in action
Gentle of heart Let me act in wisdom
Conquer my fear and doubt
Discover my own hidden gifts Meet others with compassion
Be a source of healing energies
And face each day with hope and joy. So mote it be.
SOOOOOOOOOOOO………..WHAT GIFTS DO YOU GIVE THE WORLD???
SPELL: Hold the object in your hands. Take several deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling slowly. Visualize the object glowing with white light, Connect your mind to Spirit and try to think of nothing else. Imagine the gift capturing the pure perfection of the universe and say:
“Perfect love and perfect peace The world will dance as one I dream the wish to make it real The magick now is done.” Seal your work by drawing an equal-armed cross in the air over the object.
MEDITATION: Playing with Energy Meditation Sit in a comfortable position, and begin the basics of the meditation exercise from earlier in this book. Once you have dropped into the stage of slowing your breathing, open your eyes. Take your hands, palms facing, and briskly rub them together. While you are doing this, start calling the energy from around you into your body. Hold your hands out in front of you, palms facing each other, about twelve to eighteen inches from your face. This works best of you have a solid, dark background in the direction you are facing. Focus first on your hands, and sending the energy in your body out the palms. When you feel the flow is good and strong, shift your focus to just past your hands, at a point on the background beyond them. Can you see the ethereal, nebulous energy between the palms? It may take some time for you to see it, but keep working at it, you will. Once you can see the energy there, concentrate on making it brighter and darker, increasing the flows and lessening the flows. Keep playing with the energy on a regular basis, until you get comfortable with how to manipulate it to do what you want it to do.
Once you have reached that point, start playing further with the energy. Form it into a ball, move your hands closer and further apart, seeing the ball change in size and intensity. As you get the hang of each one (over days, not minutes!), try different shapes and sizes. Play with the energy and get comfortable with its existence. This is the same energy you use in order to cast magick. Seeing it in solid form, even if there is still an ethereal quality to it, helps to strengthen your belief, and raise your levels of energy even higher.
GODDESS: Nekhbet- Egyptian Goddess of Childbirth, Motherhood, and Protection. Titles include Protectress of the Kings of Upper Egypt and Lady of the South. Daughter of Ra; wife of Hapi. She is often depicted as a vulture or a woman wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt or a vulture headdress. Her sacred animal is the vulture.
GOD: Khnum- Egyptian Creator God, God of the Annual Nile Floods, Arts and Crafts, Fertility and Creation, Gentleness. Titles include The Potter God, The Moulder. Husband of Anukis; father/husband of Satis. Often depicted as a ram-headed man and it is said he created men on his potter’s wheel. His sacred animal is the ram.
HERB/TREE: Dill- Dill gets its name from an old Norse word dilla which means “to lull” or “to soothe”. Other people’s politics and magickal drama dissolves; Dill is thought to keep manipulative witchcraft at bay. Hang up bundles of fresh Dill to dry in your kitchen and it will bring protection and serenity to your home. In olden times, it was believed that hanging a bundle of fresh Dill above a cradle would keep a baby content and happy. Dill should be added to charm bags aimed at promoting level-headedness, contentment and safety. Used in dishes it brings protection and happiness to those who consume it. It is also useful in love spells. It aids indigestion and procures sleep, but mostly eases nervousness and uneasy feelings. It is best worn in a locket. The elemental correspondence for Dill is Fire and its planetary association is Mercury. In the language of flowers, this herb announces that you are irresistible.
GEMSTONE: Cat’s Eye- Cat’s Eye is a gem mostly known as an amulet for wealth. It is used in money spells not only to protect the money one already has, but also to procure new money and even aid in recovering lost money. There attributes make Cat’s Eye the perfect stone for gamblers. Cat’s Eye is also used in spells to maintain youth and beauty, and to protect the wearer from witchcraft. Ancient Arabs believed Cat's Eye made its wearers invisible, and therefore gave them an advantage in battle. This stone, because of its physical appearance, is also said to benefit those with eye problems.
POEM: Spiyote I've been weaving, since I was three years old,
shiny graphite words and illustrations
on stiff construction paper
held together by bright hair barrettes.
Brittle charcoal bits smudged
what little space wasn't used for shadowing.
Fingers fell numb after typing entire worlds
until some odd hour, staring at a bright screen.
I spun whole epics merely on the way one walked
until I met a long-legged trickster
who, with a single trot, transiently unraveled any talent I ever had
for capturing and weaving the world around me.
I can't explain the way he looks at me,
because his eyes snatched all adverbs from my tongue.
From one poke, I fell from the cluttered web of all I thought I knew
onto his back where he carries me still.
You hear talk of hootnannies and ligers.
Someday, you'll see what a spiyote is like.
